Bert Nettles focuses his practice on the defense of complex civil litigation, with particular concentration in punitive damages claims (including bad faith and fraud actions), and extra-contractual claims against insurers. He also maintains an active appellate practice and has argued before the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Nettles joined Hand Arendall in February, 2014 after serving as a senior partner of other firms in Mobile and Birmingham, Alabama.
Mr. Nettles has been appointed as a Deputy or Assistant Attorney General by four different Alabama Attorneys General to represent the State of Alabama in various complex civil lawsuits. In addition, he has served as counsel to the Alabama Insurance Underwriting Association for more than 25 years. Mr. Nettles is listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Insurance Law.
A former president of the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association, Mr. Nettles has also served on the Advisory Committee for the United States Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and was a member of the Alabama State Legislature from 1969 - 1974. He also served as Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Gulf Coast from 1983 - 1988 and as Assistant Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama from 2000 - 2003.
