James M. "Buddy" Tingle Honored for 50 Years of Service to the Legal Community

Friday, Dec 11th, 2009

Hand Arendall is pleased to honor and recognize the illustrious legal service of James M. “Buddy” Tingle to the Alabama State Bar and the surrounding community. This year marks his 50th Anniversary, a milestone rarely achieved by those engaged in the private practice of law. Mr. Tingle is a Senior Member of Hand Arendall, and in addition to his excellent legal work, he has been an outstanding mentor and role model for lawyers throughout the State of Alabama.

“Mr. Tingle has been and continues to be a tremendous asset to our firm,” said firm manager, Preston Bolt, who added, “Buddy is truly one of the great lawyers of our time, and he has been a constant example of integrity and high ethical standards for our firm and the Bar Association.”

During Mr. Tingle’s five-decade-long legal career, he served for 47 years as the City Attorney for the City of Tarrant and served Jefferson County, Alabama as its trusted County Conservator for nearly 30 years. Mr. Tingle also served the State of Alabama through his appointments as a special assistant state attorney general from 1963-1985. In addition to his many years of legal service, Mr. Tingle was an instructor at the Birmingham School of Law for 15 years, was a trustee of the University of Montevallo for 22 years, and is a former member of the Executive Committee of the Birmingham Bar Association. Ever mindful of the need for lawyers to continue their education, Mr. Tingle has been a frequent lecturer on legal matters and has participated on many committees for the Alabama Law Institute.

In a grand testament to Mr. Tingle’s distinguished service and his impact on this community, even the Alabama Legislature honored Mr. Tingle by renaming State Highway 79 (also known as Pinson Valley Parkway) the “James M. ‘Buddy’ Tingle Parkway” through its adoption of Act 09-696. Anyone driving through Tarrant will be able to remember his service. In addition, the Board of Commissioners of the Alabama State Bar, during its Grande Convocation and Annual Business Meeting on July 18, 2009, honored Mr. Tingle by presenting him with a 50-year certificate recognizing his honorable, devoted, and dedicated service to the community. On December 11, 2009, our respected Senior Member was also recognized for his fifty years of service at the Annual Meeting of the Membership of the Birmingham Bar Association.

The firm of Hand Arendall formally celebrated Mr. Tingle’s fifty years of service to the legal community at a reception held at the firm’s Birmingham, Alabama office on December 1, 2009. Many of Mr. Tingle’s long-time partners, faithful clients and friends were in attendance, as well as many respected judges and political officials from the area.

Hand Arendall’s Birmingham Office Manager, Roger Bates, has been partnered with Mr. Tingle for close to three decades. Mr. Bates announced, “Mr. Tingle has been a valued member of Hand Arendall and a life-time friend to me. Buddy represents all that is honorable and good in our service to our clients and our community. It has been my personal honor to work side-by-side with Buddy for nearly 30 years, and we are privileged to pay tribute to his distinguished career.”

Hand Arendall is exceedingly proud of Buddy Tingle, and today we honor and acknowledge his record of achievements over a distinguished career that spans half a century. Mr. Tingle has influenced the lives of those he has served, and his legacy will motivate and inspire all who have known him.
